Spiders in Australia

Postby eoinzy » Sat Feb 14, 2009 6:33 pm

Australia has pretty much the whole top 10 of the most poisonous spiders in the world.
Australian Spiders

The most poisonous one is the Sydney Funnel Web Spider. Its pretty much only found in Sydney...as you may have guessed, and is quite dangerous. If you get bitten by one of these aggressive spiders, then you might wanna call yourself an ambulance pronto, coz within 15 minutes, you probably wont be able to call it!! :pac:
Funnily enough, when I was living in Sydney I had never seen one before. One day I found a weird spider out the back and start messing with it. We subsequently caught it in plastic cup and got it stoned by blowing smoke into the cup. Turns out, it was a baby funnel web spider and could've done me some damage. It even went for me a few times by jumping at me.

The Redback is also pretty nasty. They're Australias version of the Black Widow. Pretty much the only difference is a black widows has a red cross on its back. RedBacks have a red strip. Their body is jet black and kinda shiny. Also, their bite will cause immense pain for days! Its rare people die from these bites though. Ya can defiantely tell just by lookin at them that they're something ya dont wanna be poking at. In saying that, theres a family of them I walk passed every day that I love to get a twig and poke!! :pac:

Whitetail:
Whitetails are little buggers. They're speedy things that'll jump at ya. When they bite, their venom rots your skin and muscle, a bit like a snake bite. The venom can affect people differently too. you'll usually get very nauseaus and the bite will grow and start to rot your skin. Some people can get a recurrence of the bite a year or so later where the welt will reappear and start rotting the skin again! Its nasty. We had a couple in the house over the last few weeks hiding under the weighing scales and another behind the cupboard in the hall!

Huntsman
Although not as venomous as the others, the huntsman will cause a lot of pain if it bites....mainly due to the fact that its the biggest spider so has the biggest teeth!!
It loves to go in your house and can lay like about 100 eggs!! When they all hatch, your wall looks like its has a rug up in the top corner!
Its very flat and can hide behind paintings. They are handy to have around as they eat all the poisonous spiders and cockroaches...just make sure you only have 1 in your house or the mating will result in some serious infestation!!! :pac:

My new house is covered in ants and mosquitos! I'm trying to attract a huntsman to live in my garden to eat them. Anyone know of a good way to attract them?
