
Crowe responded to the rumours on Friday morning, writing on his verified Twitter account: "Unable to answer tweets fell off a mountain in Austria, all over red rover. Don't know how i got there, but the media are never wrong. G'Bye."
E!Online claims the story originated from a "build-your-own-bogus-calamity site".
The news of Rusty's apparent demise was reportedly then aired on New York's Z100 station, which is said to have five million listeners.
It's understood the story also briefly appeared on the actor's Wikipedia page.
Crowe's rep told UsMagazine.com that the reports are not true, which is hardly a surprise, seeing as he was spotted in Sydney on Wednesday.
The 'Robin Hood' actor isn't the first star to fall victim to a death hoax. Almost exactly one year ago, a series of reports on the internet falsely claimed that Jeff Goldblum had died.
