Postby amsroks » Thu Mar 26, 2009 5:18 am

I'm actually about to cry! turned on my laptop while ago and all my music, documents and photos are gone without a trace..nothing in recycling bin or anything! :( Is there anyway I can get it all back??? I had some really important files i needed for college and their all gone! My brother must have been using my laptop or something because there's no way i'd be so stupid as to wipe my laptop clean!
Please help!

Is your whole drive gone like formatted? or is it, just files? if its just files you can use undelete programme which gets all files that were deleted right back off the image of your hard drive, (after being deleted!) if it was reformatted or the operating system reinstalled then your fucked there gone! if you dont no how to do any of that just bring it into like pc world or somewhere like that and they can recover the files on the hard drive for you.. something like this might help, but this is just a basic one i googled so have a look around for better ones!

Good luck getting your files back... (porn? ;) )

OK, this problem has plagued me the last few years. i must have fixed 100 differet computers that had this problem.

What happens is, when u log on, your user account has a number associated with it, like an identifier. Windows users this to load ur profile. sometimes, windows manages to lose this number or something happens where it basically just doesnt load ur profile correctly. Your files are still there but it loads ur profile into another folder giving the impression that all ur files are wiped, and it looks like you've just logged in for the first time.

now, i've seen this problem on windows 2000 and windows XP. amsrocks is on windows vista. i assumed this problem would be done away wit on vista since microsoft assured us that vista would be built from the ground up and not just built on top of XP, but that is obviously what they've done!!

anyway, to fix it, go to the folder that contains all the user profiles, ie c:\documents and settings (on XP\2000) or C:\users (on vista). There you will see that there is an extra, new, folder there. that is where ur profile is being loaded into. what ya need to do is log in as another administrator login and swap the folder names of the existing folder (named after ur username) and the new folder (could be "temp", could be "ur username".xxxx where "xxx" is ur machinename).

if it does not let u rename them, reboot and try again. if it still doesnt let you rename it then you'll just have to copy all the files from the original profile folder into the new one.

should be fixed then.

ye they'll be takin up double the space if u jsut copied them over to the new profile.

ifu cut and paste them then they wont. like u prob havecopies of them in both profiles now.
