In his battle with the "fat cats" of Wall Street, President Barack Obama has almost been upstaged - by a rodent.

Mr Obama had just begun a Rose Garden statement lauding the end of a US Senate filibuster on his economic overhaul when a visitor dashed out of the bushes to his right.

As photographers scrambled to get the snap in the sun-drenched garden, the creature scurried straight past the podium with the presidential seal.

It then rushed for another set of shrubs to Mr Obama's left.

But the President did not even seem to notice - at least he did not show any reaction.

He finished his statement shortly afterwards and returned to the White House without answering questions on other subjects.

Once he was safely inside the Oval Office, a fierce debate erupted among the gathered press.

But rather than discussing any complicated economic policies, arguments raged about what exactly had scuttled across the garden.

Was the uninvited streaker definitely a rat? Or could it have been a mouse? Or a mole or a vole?

Vital questions indeed.
