US Fears Over '10-Second Fight Club' Craze

Postby amsroks » Sat May 15, 2010 5:09 am

Concern is growing in the United States that a school craze of fighting furiously for ten seconds might be spreading nationally.

High school and even primary school pupils have become involved in a dangerous underground practice called 10-second fight club, according to news reports.
The dangerous pursuit is apparently modelled on the Brad Pitt movie Fight Club, which focused on young men working out their frustrations with underground fist fights.
According to Fox News, the rules of the teen ten-second fight club are extremely simple - you get 10 seconds to inflict the most damage possible on your opponent.

On April 12, a parent called emergency services after hearing their son was picked on by a fellow pupil at Lakeland Elementary School, in Minnesota.
The Washington County sheriff's office was called in to investigate, but some parents complain the school is not doing enough to protect students.
A recent survey in Washington County found bullying was the top concern of students and parents.
"If a student is not feeling safe at school, they're not reaching their full potential," violence prevention educator Jane Straub said.
Ms Straub educated students on the lasting impact of bullying.
She said about 20% of children are victims of student violence, but the majority of bystanders are often afraid to speak up and make it stop.
There has been a spread of violence in other states, both between pupils and even by teachers against students.

A national outrage was caused earlier this week after a female teacher repeatedly punched and kicked a boy in a Texas classroom.
The science teacher has since been fired, pending an investigation, after she was filmed attacking the 13-year-old boy.
And a student in Florida, Josie Lou Ratley, had every bone broken in her face after being attacked by another student.
Her alleged assailant, 15-year-old Wayne Treacy, reportedly sent friends text messages of his attack plan.
"Snap her neck then stomp her skull. Fastest way I could think of," read one of the texts.
However, there are some promising signs of violence reduction occuring, especially in troubled Chicago neighbourhoods.
Robeson High School launched a campaign called Ceasefire, a violence prevention initiative targeting high-risk youths, has shown a reduction in shootings in the Englewood area.

I thought you weren't allowed to talk about fight club? :?
