Rangers defender Kirk Broadfoot was hospitalised after being scalded when an egg exploded in his face.
The Scotland international suffered facial injuries as he inspected two eggs he was poaching in his microwave. One blew up, squirting hot water at him.
Broadfoot, 25, went home after receiving treatment for a scalded cheek and he is now being monitored by club doctors.
A Rangers insider told the Daily Record: "It may sound funny but it was quite a serious accident. Kirk's face was quite badly burned.
"As it happens, it was a close shave. He was very close to burning his eye, which could have had a serious impact on his career."
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents spokeswoman said: "Our advice is always to take care when dealing with boiling water in a microwave."
Broadfoot declined to comment.

The right-back is in good company, having suffered the latest in a long run of bizarre football injuries. Here are some of the best:
Goalkeepers Dave Beasant and Santiago Canizares both dropped glass bottles and damaged their feet attempting to 'control' them as they fell. Canizares' bottle contained aftershave, while Beasant's was full of salad cream.
England stars Rio Ferdinand, David Seaman and David James have all been injured while watching the television.
Former England midfielder David Batty damaged his Achilles when his young son ran him over with a tricycle.
Darius Vassell and Charlie George injured their toes with a drill and a lawnmower respectively.
Last year, Italy midfielder Gennaro Gattuso dislocated every finger in his left hand after falling down a hole between two dug-outs in training.
In 1975, Manchester United goalkeeper Alec Stepney dislocated his jaw shouting at his defenders.
Earlier this season, Stoke midfielder Liam Lawrence twisted his ankle when he tripped over his dog.
Portuguese league player Igor broke his leg in 2006 when he and team-mate Bechara botched a free-kick routine; both went to strike the ball and collided.
