The TV host said he was mortified after accidentally insulting cancer sufferer, Mairead Lynch, during a live TV broadcast on New Year's Eve, after he mistook a turban she was wearing for a party hat. At the start of his radio show yesterday, he issued a heartfelt apology.
"I just want to take this opportunity to say to you, Mairead, and I know you're listening today and to your boyfriend Stephen, and to your families and your friends, that from the bottom of my heart I am genuinely, genuinely sorry if I caused you any upset or distress," he said. "Unfortunately, as can happen in these situations, I engaged my mouth before my brain and if there's any way in the world I could turn back the clock, believe me, I would."
And addressing Mairead and boyfriend Stephen McGinn, who took part in the live Millionaire Raffle Draw on RTE 1, he stressed: "I wish you happiness and good health for the future."
Mooney had asked Mairead: "Why is she wearing that little thing on her head?" He continued: "Is it a bad hair day, Mairead?"
Mairead looked momentarily stunned, before replying: "You could say that, yeah."
But after the show, when he was informed it was because she had undergone chemotherapy, he apologised privately to the couple, who accepted the apology.
Stephen said: "Nothing was meant by it. Mairead was upset by it, but Derek apologised after the show."
He annoys me sooooooo much!!!
