Hollywood star Farrah Fawcett has lost her battle with cancer after fighting the disease for three years.

The actor, most famous for her role on the 1970s TV show Charlie's Angels, was given her last rites by a priest in hospital on Wednesday.

Fawcett played private investigator Jill Munroe in the Charlie's Angels series and went on to appear on Broadway and telemovies.

Her movie roles include The Cannonball Run, Man of the House and Nazi Hunter: The Beate Klarsfeld Story.

Her long-time companion Ryan O'Neal spent most of his time of late with Fawcett, recently telling US reporter Barbara Walters that he asked her to marry him.

"I've asked her to marry me, again, and she's agreed," O'Neal said.

O'Neal spoke to Walters as 62-year-old Fawcett continued to struggle for survival after being diagnosed with rectal cancer in 2006. The cancer then spread to her liver.

He has been in the public eye as Fawcett's health condition deteriorated, tearfully talking to television shows and magazines about her cancer ahead of a heart-wrenching video diary, Farrah's Story, which was broadcast in May.

The couple has one son, Redmond O'Neal, who was shown in Fawcett's video diary being released from drugs-related jail time to visit his bedridden mother.
